“Ang bongga!”
In the generation of making a difference and having a purpose, the meaning of the word bongga has shifted course.
Some 10 or 15 years ago, Filipino crafts and fashion could only be found in a few novelty and specialty shops. Remember your Linggo ng Wika days in school? Did you go Filipino-costume hunting with your mom? Perhaps, that was only one of the few times that Filipino fashion came alive.
Over time, famous local designers started using the Filipino fabric for creative fashion. This is seen in formal events like weddings, or when our politicians parade them on the red carpet during SONA.
But what about the everyday Pinoy? Is it alive, or is it just something we reserve for special occasions?
In recent years, it is worth noting that there has been more and more of these crafts in our local stores. The call for #BuyFilipino and #SupportLocal spiked in the world of social media, making it more known and relatable. Furthermore, many of the purpose-driven youth have embraced the shift to intentional living, being mindful not only of the “what” but also the “why” in one’s day-to-day decision-making. There has been a conscious and purposeful effort in the mere act of shopping, whether it be a form of appreciation for local design, or simply as a means of support to the livelihood of Filipino craftsmen.
The world of Filipino arts and culture is extremely vast. Make local your first choice and wear Pinoy proudly any day.
Strut the Bongga Ka ‘Day in you.
